Lijiang to Kangding: A Road Trip Guide

The route from Lijiang to Kangding covers roughly 350 kilometers along the G214 and G318, passing through the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The first stretch follows the historic Tea Horse Road, where mule caravans once transported pu-erh tea to Tibet. Driving time is 6–8 hours, but plan for a full day to savor the scenery.

The journey ascends from 2,400 meters in Lijiang to over 4,000 meters at the highest pass, with dramatic shifts from subtropical valleys to alpine meadows. The best times are April–June and September–October, when skies are clear and temperatures moderate.

The landscape transitions from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the Jinsha River valley, then climbs to the grasslands of Shangri-La.
