Lijiang to Anshun Road Trip: Scenic Drive Guide

The journey from Lijiang to Anshun covers approximately 700 kilometers, crossing the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau along the G56 and S102 highways. This route passes through the historic Tea Horse Road corridor, where the elevation drops from 2,400 meters to 1,100 meters, offering dramatic shifts in landscape and climate.

Unlike the crowded Kunming–Guiyang expressway, this western path is favored by local drivers for its lighter traffic and scenic vistas. However, the winding mountain sections demand attention, and weather can change rapidly.

Road quality is good, but wildlife like wild boar crossing the road is a hazard near forested areas, especially at dawn and dusk. Keep an eye on speed limits (100 km/h on expressways, 60 km/h on S102 curves).

Widely available rest stops with clean toilets and water refill stations occur every 30–40 km on G56. For a mid-journey break, the town of Qujing (past Kunming) has a Yunnan Province Road Transportation Service Center with a 24-hour café.

This route is suitable for families; most rest areas have playgrounds, and the scenic Weining Grass Sea (off S102) offers a flat meadow for kids to run. Pets are allowed in rest areas but not on public transport; the Huaxi service area near Guiyang has a fenced pet zone.

To manage fatigue, plan to stop every 2 hours for 15 minutes. For a natural detour, the Jiayi Cave (entrance ¥60) lies 10 km east of Anshun, but check water levels in summer.

The most efficient route is via G56 (Hangrui Expressway) from Lijiang to Dali, then S102 toward Kunming, merging onto G60 before heading south to Anshun. This route avoids major urban congestion and offers well-maintained toll roads.

The drive transitions from arid valleys to pine forests and karst peaks. En route, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old Town of Lijiang (Dayan) features Naxi architecture and the Black Dragon Pool, a clear spring with a view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

After Dali, the landscape becomes more rugged, with the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) parallel to the highway for 80 kilometers. Stop at the Shaxi Market (Thursdays) to see traditional Bai silverwork and local produce, but avoid Sundays when it’s closed.

Climatic conditions shift from mild Lijiang (average 15°C) to humid Anshun (18°C, 1,300 mm annual rainfall). This affects driving – expect fog and rain in the Guizhou section.
