Lava Hot Springs to Dubois: Idaho's Geologic Highway

The route from Lava Hot Springs, ID to Dubois, WY follows US-26 east, a corridor that straddles the Eastern Snake River Plain, a vast volcanic feature formed by the Yellowstone hotspot over millions of years. This road passes through the historic Oregon Trail corridor, where wagon ruts are still visible near Pleasant Valley.

The drive covers approximately 130 miles and takes about 2.5 hours of pure driving time, but the region’s geology and recreation invite deliberate pacing.

The dominant feature is Craters of the Moon National Monument, a vast expanse of lava fields, cinder cones, and sagebrush steppe. This area is part of the Yellowstone hotspot track, and its volcanic formations date from 15,000 to 2,000 years ago. The monument offers a 7-mile loop drive and several short hikes, such as the Devils Orchard and Inferno Cone trails.

Beyond the park, the route traverses the high desert, with views of the Lost River Range to the north. The small towns of Blackfoot, Arco, and Dubois provide basic services and a glimpse into ranching culture.

Arco is known as the first city in the world lit by nuclear power (1955). The local diner serves classic American fare, and the community embraces its atomic heritage. For a unique stop, visit the EBR-1 reactor site, about 18 miles east of Arco, a National Historic Landmark.

The road is generally well-maintained, but winter can bring ice and snow; summer thunderstorms may cause sudden downpours. Watch for deer and elk, especially at dawn and dusk. Emergency services are limited; the nearest hospitals are in Idaho Falls and Rexburg.

For families, Craters of the Moon is a highlight, with a visitor center offering exhibits and junior ranger programs. The park’s caves require flashlights and may be challenging for very young children. A picnic area near the visitor center is convenient.

Rest areas are limited; plan stops at Blackfoot or Arco. The route is not heavily trafficked, so fatigue management is crucial—take breaks every two hours, and consider stretching at the Lava Flow campground or the Arco rest area.

Fuel stops are sparse between Blackfoot and Arco, the longest gap being about 70 miles. Gas prices in Idaho are typically 10–15 cents cheaper per gallon than in Wyoming, so fill up before crossing the state line. The road is two-lane for most of the route, with occasional passing lanes on grades.
