Spanning 480 kilometers from the Mekong River town of Kratie in Cambodia to Suphan Buri in central Thailand, this route crosses the Dongrek Mountains and cuts through the ancient Khmer heartland. The border at Chong Sa Ngam (O Smach) is a key crossing, historically a silk and cattle trading point, now a busy transit for travelers and goods.

Driving times vary from 8 to 11 hours depending on border procedures and road conditions. The Cambodian side (NR7 to NR68) is largely two-lane with ongoing upgrades, while Thailand's route (NR2207, NR24, and NR333) offers smoother tarmac and better signage.

Useful to know: you’ll need to adjust your watch and money—Cambodia uses the riel and Thailand the baht, with a one-hour time difference (Thailand is behind).

The journey starts on National Road 7 (NR7) from Kratie, heading north through Snuol and on to Sen Monorom. The road is paved but has occasional potholes, especially after rainy season. You'll bypass Kratie's famed Irrawaddy dolphins—best seen by boat early morning before leaving town.

At Sen Monorom, turn west onto National Road 76 (NR76) toward the border at O Smach. This stretch is hilly and scenic, crossing the coffee-growing region of Mondulkiri. Border facilities are modern; the Cambodian side is open from 6 am to 10 pm, the Thai side from 6 am to 10 pm, but times may vary.

In Kratie, sample the local amok fish curry at night market stalls. Along the border town of O Smach, duty-free shops and casinos lure mostly Thai visitors. In Thailand's Surin and Buriram provinces, stop at silk weaving villages like Ban Tha Sawang, where handmade brocades are sold at a third of Bangkok prices.

Suphan Buri itself is rich in history: the U Thong National Museum exhibits Bronze Age artifacts, and Sam Chuk Market—a century-old wooden shophouse street—serves boat noodles and vintage snacks.

Both countries drive on the right, but road culture differs. Cambodian drivers often use lanes arbitrarily; watch for motorbikes and livestock. Thailand's highways are well-marked but speed limits are strictly enforced—cameras and police checkpoints are common. Always carry your passport and vehicle documents.

Road quality is generally good on the Thai side, with well-maintained tarmac and service stations every 30-50 km. Cambodia's NR76 is curvy but recently upgraded; taken at moderate speed, it's safe.

This route is suitable for families, especially older children. Plan stops every 2 hours: in Sen Monorom, visit the indigenous Phnong village with their traditional longhouses.
