Koh Tao to Nakhon Si Thammarat: Essential Road Trip Guide

Koh Tao, a 21-square-kilometre island in the Gulf of Thailand, is known for its scuba diving schools and party beaches. Nakhon Si Thammarat, a historic city 300 kilometres to the south, is one of Thailand's oldest inhabited cities, dating back to the Srivijaya Kingdom. The drive between them involves a ferry to mainland Surat Thani and then a southbound route on Highway 41, a journey of roughly five hours excluding the ferry.

Ferries from Koh Tao dock at the Tha Thong Pier in Surat Thani, but the main highway junction is a 20-minute drive south. From there, head south on the Phet Kasem Road (Highway 41) towards Chumphon and then onto Nakhon Si Thammarat. The route is fully paved, multi-lane in most parts, and well-maintained, but be prepared for frequent traffic lights in town areas.

A key detour is the Khao Luang National Park, home to Thailand's tallest mountain south of Bangkok (Khao Luang, 1,780 meters), offering stunning jungle waterfalls like Krung Ching and Phrom Lok. However, the park research station is a 40-minute drive east of the highway, so it's a commitment.

Local commerce thrives on roadside fruit stalls, especially around Tha Sala, where you can buy Rambutan and Langsat. But for a unique cultural pause, visit Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihaan in Nakhon Si Thammarat, one of southern Thailand's most revered temples, housing a tooth relic of the Buddha. The market scene is also vibrant: Nakhon Si Thammarat's night market on Ratchadamnoen Road is famous for its late-night vegetarian food stalls and local Jok (rice porridge).
