Koh Phangan to Yala: Complete Road Trip Guide

Koh Phangan's ferry docks at Thong Sala, connecting to the mainland at Surat Thani. From there, a journey south to Yala follows the Phet Kasem Road (Route 4), the country's longest highway at 1,274 km. The drive passes through dramatic limestone karsts in Krabi and the rubber estates of Phatthalung.

Your total time behind the wheel is about 12 hours, not counting ferry rides and breaks. The route slices through three climatic zones: southern gulf's wettest months (Oct–Dec), the peninsula's dry corridor (Jan–Apr), and the lower south's monsoon shadow (May–Sep).

Route 4 has two-lane segments between Phatthalung and Hat Yai; overtaking requires careful judgment. Rain can reduce visibility, and highway shoulders are narrow in hilly sections. Drive with daytime running lights.

For families, the ideal stop is at the town of Ranong, 350 km from Surat Thani. There, the Ranong Canyon water park has a children's pool and flumes. Another kid-friendly stop is Hat Yai's Magic Museum, an interactive science centre.

Pets travel well on this route if you keep to a crate. Pet-friendly hotels are common, but require pre-booking. About 200 km from Yala, stop at Chana, where a park with a short nature trail lets your dog stretch.

Fatigue management is key on this 12-hour drive. Plan to stop every 90 minutes at any of the numerous rest stops with shaded trees. The 7-Eleven and Amazon Coffee outlets at PTT stations provide air conditioning and clean toilets. A 2-hour lunch break at the floating market in Thale Noi (near Phatthalung) is a must.

The initial ferry ride (Raja Ferry from Thong Sala to Donsak) takes 2.5 hours; arrive 45 minutes early to line up. From Don Sak, follow Highway 401, then merge onto Route 4 at Chumphon. That highway is paved asphalt for 99% of the route and toll-free.

The first stop south of Surat Thani is Khao Sok National Park (exit at Km 45), where you can overnight in a bamboo raft house – a unique experience on a man-made lake. Then, at Khao Lak, a 10 km detour to Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park offers quiet beaches with little current.

Heading further, the Krabi province unfolds with iconic rock formations coastal overlooks, particularly at Nopparat Thara Beach viewpoint. Trang offers Chae Son Waterfall, best visited in the wet season.

Yala is the gateway to Betong, with a hot spring and tea plantations. In Yala town, visit the weekend market where locals sell batik textiles and Pattani-style silverware. The region is renowned for its fruit – rambutans and durians in June.
