Kansas City to Alton Road Trip: Missouri River Historic Drive

The drive from Kansas City, MO to Alton, IL follows the historic Missouri River corridor for much of its 260-mile journey. This route was once a passage for Lewis and Clark, who wintered at Camp Dubois near Alton in 1803-1804. Today, Interstate 70 and US Route 40 trace the river's path through rolling hills and fertile farmland.

The primary route is I-70 east from Kansas City to St. Louis, then I-270 north and IL-3 to Alton. Total driving time is about 4.5 hours without stops. For a relaxed journey, plan for 6-7 hours including breaks.

• Fuel: Gas stations every 20-30 miles along I-70. Prices are slightly lower in Missouri ($3.10/gal vs $3.30 in Illinois).
• Tolls: I-70 has no tolls; I-270 in Illinois is free. The Clark Bridge ($2) is the only toll near Alton.
• Rest areas: Missouri has clean rest stops at mile markers 89, 148, and 200. Illinois has a rest area on I-270 near Chain of Rocks.
