Kanchanaburi to Samraong: Road Trip Guide

The roads near the border have sharp curves and occasional livestock, so reduce speed in the mountains. There are safe pull-off points every 20 kilometers, but no official rest areas until the border. Break up the trip with a stop at a local diner in Ban Phu Nam Ron, which serves both Thai and Cambodian dishes.

• For families: the route has no playgrounds or major attractions; plan for a picnic at the viewpoint near Km 85, where there is open space.
• Pets are allowed at the border, but ensure you have an up-to-date rabies vaccination certificate.
• For fatigue, take a 15-minute break every two hours; the most pleasant spot is at the temple near the border, which offers shade.

Highway 323 is well-marked and has a good surface until near the border, but from the border to Samraong the road alternates between potholed sections and new tarmac. Fuel stations become sparse after the border; nearly all available stations sell Cambodian diesel and gasoline. It is wise to fill your tank in Kanchanaburi, as the last convenient Thai station is about 30 kilometers before Ban Phu Nam Ron.

• Currency exchange and basic convenience stores are available at the border.
• Road tolls: none on both sides, but a small vehicle entry fee applies in Cambodia (around 1 USD).

The route passes near the western edge of the Sankamphaeng Range, where the dry dipterocarp forest transitions to scrubland as you descend toward the Tonlé Sap basin. The best landscape pull-offs are just before the border village of Ban Phu Nam Ron, where you can see rolling hills without tourist infrastructure.

Local commerce is concentrated at the border market, which sells packaged goods, local fruit, and Vietnamese coffee vendors. Further into Cambodia, the provincial town of Samraong has a vibrant morning market with fresh produce and an assortment of street food.
