Departing Kaifeng, you'll join the G35 expressway, a straight shot northeast that slices through the Henan plain before climbing onto the low hills of western Shandong. The 400-kilometer drive typically takes 4.5 hours without traffic, but plan for 5.5 to 6 hours with rest stops.

This route crosses the Yellow River floodplain, a landscape that alternates between dense farmland and modern industrial parks. Historical layers are visible everywhere: ancient canal towns, modern high-speed rail lines, and the occasional watchtower hint at centuries of movement.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Temple and Cemetery of Confucius in Qufu, about 2 hours from both cities, is the most visited heritage site along this route. Its buildings date back to the 5th century BC, though much was rebuilt in the Ming dynasty. You can visit for about 70 CNY entry.

Climatic conditions: July brings heavy rain and occasional flooding in the floodplain—avoid driving after typhoon remnants. Winter (Dec-Feb) is dry but foggy, especially around dawn near rivers. Road quality on G35 is generally good, but watch for uneven surfaces near the Yellow River bridge and in the last 20 kilometers before Jinan, where heavy trucks cause rutting. Speed limits vary: 120 km/h on open sections, 100 km/h near urban areas—obey posted signs, as hidden cameras are common.

For families, the best stop is the Qufu service area (about 2 hours in). It has a clean playground, family restrooms, and a kids' menu at the noodle shop.
