Jiaxing, a city on the Grand Canal’s southern stretch, sits at the edge of the Yangtze River Delta. Putuo, known as Putuo District, lies on Zhoushan Island, connected to the mainland by the Zhoushan Cross-Sea Bridge. This drive takes you from canal-fed plains to a marine island, skirting the Qiantang River estuary.

You can actually reach Putuo by ferry from Zhoushan, but driving offers more control over time and lets you visit attractions en route. The total distance is about 145 kilometers, which typically takes 2 hours and 15 minutes under normal traffic.

Outside Jiaxing, flat farmland gives way to the Hangzhou Bay area, where you can detour to the famous Qiantang River tidal bore viewpoint at Haining (25 km west). The landscape transitions to rolling hills as you enter Zhejiang’s interior, with tea fields near Yuyao.

Zhejiang’s subtropical monsoon climate brings hot, humid summers (avg. 28°C in July) and mild, damp winters (5°C in January). The rainy season hits June-July, so pack rain gear.

For families, the West Lake area offers boat rides and parks, but prime spots on Putuo (Island) require a ferry from Zhoushan. The ferry is child-friendly, and many island hotels have family rooms.

Fuel costs are reasonable, with regular petrol around 7.5 RMB per liter at state-run stations like Sinopec and PetroChina. Plan fuel for round trips, as island stations may be limited after peak hours.
