Jiaozuo to Taian Road Trip: Highways, History, and Hidden Gems

This route follows the G35 expressway northeast from Jiaozuo, crossing the Yellow River floodplain into the rolling hills of central Shandong. The total distance is approximately 370 kilometers, typically driven in five to six hours under normal traffic.

The road is a major freight corridor, so expect steady truck traffic, but it is well-maintained and wide. Jiaozuo sits at the foot of the Taihang Mountains, while Taian is the gateway to Mount Tai, one of China's most sacred peaks.

The G35 expressway is tolled; expect a total toll of about 150 RMB for the full drive. Fuel costs vary, but with a mid-size car getting 8 liters per 100 km, budget around 220 RMB for gas. Service areas appear roughly every 40 kilometers, offering fuel, food, and restrooms.

For specific fuel stops, the Zhongyuan Service Area near Heze is known for clean facilities and a decent restaurant. Another reliable option is the Feicheng Service Area closer to Taian, which has a wider selection of snacks and beverages.

The route passes through several agricultural counties, including Changyuan and Dongming, where roadside markets sell local produce like dates and peanuts. For a glimpse of traditional architecture, consider a short detour to the ancient water town of Nanyang, near Weishan Lake.

However, the most significant cultural draw is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mount Tai at the route's end. This mountain has been a place of pilgrimage for over 3,000 years, with numerous temples and stone inscriptions. The climb to the summit takes around three hours, but a cable car does reduce the effort.
