Idaho Falls to Lincoln City Drive: Epic Oregon Trail Journey

This 800-mile route traces the historic Oregon Trail, crossing the Snake River Plain, the Blue Mountains, and the Cascade Range before reaching the Oregon Coast. The first documented crossing by wagon in 1836 took five months; today you can drive it in 12 hours.

The journey begins on I-15 south from Idaho Falls, then merges onto I-84 west. Near Baker City, OR, you shift to US-30 west, then follow I-84 to Portland and US-26 west to Lincoln City. The drive passes through five distinct ecological zones.

The route covers lava fields, mountain passes, and temperate rainforest. Key natural landmarks include Craters of the Moon National Monument, the Columbia River Gorge, and Saddle Mountain. Each area supports distinct local commerce, from Idaho potato farms to Oregon wine country.
