Hoa Binh to Bac Ninh Road Trip Guide

The route between Hoa Binh and Bac Ninh follows the Red River Delta's southern edge, a transition from mountainous northwest Vietnam to the flat, industrial plains of the Kinh Bac region. The road is mostly National Highway 6 (QL6) to Hanoi, then National Highway 1A (QL1) northeast to Bac Ninh. Road safety is generally good on the highways, but watch for motorbikes merging from agricultural lanes. Overall, the route is safe, but driving at night is not recommended due to limited lighting on the mountain stretches.

The initial stretch from Hoa Binh winds through limestone mountains and the artificial Hoa Binh Reservoir, created by the dam on the Da River. This area is cooler by about 2-3°C than the lowlands, offering a pleasant microclimate. Keep an eye out for local markets selling forest honey and bamboo shoots — these make excellent souvenirs.

As you cross into Hanoi's administrative boundary, the landscape flattens into rice paddies and industrial zones. Near Bac Ninh, the terrain is entirely flat, and the province is known for its traditional craft villages, such as Dong Ho painting village, where you can buy folk woodblock prints. The local commerce is vibrant with small eateries serving bun cha and pho.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long in Hanoi and the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh, both a slight detour from this route but accessible if you have extra time. The core route itself has no UNESCO-designated sites.

Most of the drive is on national highways with good asphalt and clear signage, but the section through Hanoi's Ring Road 3 can be congested. Fuel stations are abundant along both highways, with a concentration around the Hoa Binh-Hanoi border. As of 2025, petrol prices are roughly 23,000 VND per liter, and the round trip will consume about 12 liters for an average car, costing under 300,000 VND.
