Handan, an ancient city in Hebei, and Shangqiu in Henan are connected by a direct 320-kilometer route that follows the G45 Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway for most of the journey. The drive typically takes 3.5 to 4 hours without traffic, but the real value lies in the off-highway detours that reveal the region's agricultural heartland.

This route cuts across the North China Plain, a geologically young alluvial expanse formed by the Yellow River's frequent shifts. The road is mostly flat and straight, making for easy driving, but the landscape offers subtle changes in crop patterns and soil tones that reward an observant eye.

Fuel economy on this flat route is excellent; most vehicles achieve 6-7 liters per 100 km. The highway has service areas roughly every 40-50 km, all offering standard petrol and diesel. Toll charges for the entire trip amount to about ¥120.

The highway is well-lit at night and has no sharp curves, but crosswinds can be strong during spring (March–April), especially for high-sided vehicles. The climate is temperate monsoon; summers are hot and humid (30°C+), while winters are cold with occasional snow that is quickly cleared by road crews.

For families, the service area at Hebi has a small children's play area and clean restrooms. Pets are allowed in rest areas on leashes, but not inside buildings; most service areas have designated pet relief spots. If you have extra time, consider the hidden off-route spot of the Yuanbao Lake, a small reservoir just off a rural road near Neihuang (take exit 12 and follow signs for 3 km). This peaceful spot is ideal for a picnic and photography.

Local commerce thrives near the toll gates, with hawkers selling snacks like spiced tofu and sesame cakes. For a more authentic meal, exit at Shangqiu and head to the old city's Huimin Street, where you can taste Shui Xi Noodle Soup and other local specialties.

The North China Plain here is a patchwork of winter wheat and summer corn fields, interspersed with cotton and peanuts. In late October, the fields turn golden, and the air carries the scent of harvested crops.

For a closer look, take the S101 parallel to the highway; it passes through small villages where you can buy fresh produce directly from farmers. Local markets in towns like Neihuang offer dried dates and pears at low prices.

Larger towns along the route, such as Anyang and Hebi, are industrial centers; their outskirts have clusters of workshops making auto parts and ceramic tiles. A stop at a local tea house in Anyang provides a glimpse into the region's slower pace.

Handan itself is home to the Congtai Park, a historical site featuring a terrace from the Warring States period, but that's just the beginning. The route also connects to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yin Xu, the last capital of the Shang dynasty, located near Anyang. Yin Xu is renowned for its oracle bones and the archaeological remains of a vast ancient city.
