Hallstatt to Pula Road Trip: Alpine Lakes to Adriatic Coast

The A10 Tauern Autobahn south of Salzburg is notorious for its steep gradients reaching 10%. On the Hallstatt to Pula drive, you descend from 500m in the Alps to sea level in Istria within four hours.

Most of the route is well-paved with modern highways. Night driving is safe on A10 (well-lit tunnels) but avoid rural roads in Slovenia after dark due to wildlife.

From Hallstatt take B166 to B145 then A1 towards Salzburg. At Salzburg merge onto A10 (Tauern Autobahn) south to Villach. In Villach switch to A2 east to the Karawanken Tunnel (toll €8.50).

• Croatian A8/A9: €10-15 tolls (pay at booths).

The route crosses four distinct geographic zones. Starting from the Dachstein massif, descending into the Karawanks, then the Slovenian Kras plateau, and ending on the Istrian peninsula.

• Lake Bled (Slovenia): detour 20 min from A2 exit Lesce. Turquoise glacial lake with a medieval castle.
• Postojna Cave: 5 min off A1 exit Postojna. 24 km of karst caves, train ride inside. €29.90 adult.
• Predjama Castle: 10 min from Postojna. Built into a cliff face. €16.80.

• Stop at Okrepčevalnica Malek in Postojna for local 'jota' (bean and sauerkraut stew).
