Haikou to Nam Dinh: Road Trip Guide, Stops, and Tips

Along the Gulf of Tonkin, this route connects China's southern island capital with Vietnam's coastal Nam Dinh province. The drive covers roughly 600 km if you take the ferry from Haikou to Guangdong and then head southwest into Vietnam, or about 800 km if you loop through Guangxi and the border at Mong Cai. Historically, this corridor follows sections of the ancient maritime silk road.

The most direct path involves taking the ferry from Haikou to Hai'an (1.5 hours), then driving via Nanning before crossing the border at Huu Nghi Quan (Friendship Pass) near Lang Son. Total driving time is typically 12–14 hours, excluding border formalities.

Road quality is generally good: Chinese expressways are well-maintained, while Vietnam's QL.1A is a mix of 4-lane divided sections and 2-lane stretches. Be cautious of motorbikes and livestock on the Vietnamese sections. Speed limits: 120 km/h in China, 80–100 km/h in Vietnam.

For families, rest stops in China have clean restrooms and convenience stores; in Vietnam, some rest areas are simple, but there are many family-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating. In the Red River Delta, watch for water buffalo near the road.

Fatigue management: plan to stop every 2–3 hours. Notable rest points: Leizhou Peninsula (after ferry), Nanning, and Lang Son. For pet owners, both countries require a rabies vaccination certificate and a veterinary health certificate; check with your vet before travel.

After leaving Haikou, the route passes the volcanic basalt plateau of Leizhou Peninsula. Once in Vietnam, the northern highlands around Lang Son feature karst limestone formations, similar to Ninh Binh (the 'Ha Long Bay on land'). Further south, the Red River Delta is flat, with rice paddies stretching to the horizon.

Hidden off-route spots: near Thanh Hoa (just north of Nam Dinh) lies the ancient capital Hoa Lu, and the Phat Diem Stone Cathedral in Ninh Binh province is a unique 19th-century blend of Vietnamese and European architecture. Also, the Tam Coc river caves near Ninh Binh offer boat rides through rice paddies.

Local commerce along the route includes tea plantations near Thai Nguyen, and in Nam Dinh, the famous Pho (noodle soup) is a must. The local market at Cho Lo offers traditional Vietnamese fabrics and crafts.

The route uses China's G75 Lanhai Expressway and Vietnam's QL.1A (National Highway 1A). In China, tolls are paid by distance; expect ¥300–400 (RMB) from Hai'an to the border. In Vietnam, the Hanoi–Hai Phong expressway (part of the route if you detour) charges VND 1,500 per km, but QL.1A is mostly toll-free.

Fuel economy varies: in China, petrol costs ¥8.5–9.5 per liter, while in Vietnam it's VND 20,000–23,000 (about $0.85–0.97). A mid-size car with 600 km total will consume roughly 50 liters. Budget accordingly.

Border crossing at Huu Nghi Quan is open 7:00–22:00; have passport, visa, and vehicle papers ready. Vietnamese car insurance is mandatory for foreign vehicles (about VND 220,000 per week).
