Guilin to Xingyi Road Trip: Karst Peaks, Hidden Villages

Leaving Guilin, the first 30 minutes on the G65 Baomao Expressway trace the Li River's oxbow bends, where bamboo rafts drift past elephant-trunk hills. This is the start of a 520-kilometer route that ends in Xingyi's dramatic 'Wanfenglin' (Ten Thousand Peaks) forest, one of China's largest karst clusters.

The G65 swiftly gives way to the G78 Shankun Expressway, and the driving time Guilin to Xingyi typically runs 6 hours without stops. The scenery transitions smoothly from lush river valleys to terraced rice fields, then to the arid, jagged peaks of Guizhou Province.

A key early milestone is the Longsheng Rice Terraces, visible from the highway near Heping village – this is the first major stop for photographers. The Li River itself, then, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty.

Fuel prices are roughly 6.50-7.00 RMB per liter. A mid-size car will burn about 6 liters per 100 km, so the full journey costs around 220 RMB in fuel. Toll fees are substantial: approximately 300 RMB for the entire route, payable by ETC or cash at booths.

The G78 is in excellent condition, with separated dual carriageways and two lanes each way. Road quality remains high through the mountainous sections, though sharp curves demand caution in wet weather.

This route is well-served by rest areas roughly every 40 kilometers. These modern facilities include fuel stations, dining courts, and clean restrooms.

The defining features of this drive are the karst peaks, which are formed by limestone erosion over millions of years. In Xingyi, the Wanfenglin Scenic Area showcases over 20,000 individual peaks, best viewed at sunrise from the nearby observation deck.

Off the main highway, the town of Luoxiang is a hidden gem where you can sample 'Guilin rice noodles' with sour bamboo shoots, a local specialty. Local farmers sell fresh pomelos and kumquats at makeshift stalls along the expressway exits.

For a deeper cultural detour, the ancient village of Dali, just 5 km off the G78 near Nandan, offers well-preserved wooden houses and a peaceful river walk. The local commerce here revolves around handmade silver crafts and batik fabrics, unique to the Buyi and Miao ethnic groups.

Traffic is generally light except during Chinese national holidays, when congestion can add two hours. Speed limits range from 80 to 100 km/h, with frequent camera enforcement. Keep a safe distance in fog, common in the early morning.

For families, the Maolan National Nature Reserve, about 150 km before Xingyi, offers short, easy walking trails and a waterfall suitable for children. Rest areas also provide playground equipment and infant care rooms.

Pets are welcome in most rest areas, but only the larger service centers have designated pet relief areas. When leaving the car, it is essential to keep pets leashed, as many stops are adjacent to busy roads.

To combat fatigue, plan to stop every two hours. The Longtan Service Area, at the 300 km mark, is particularly pleasant, with shaded picnic tables and a lake view. Short naps in the car are common practice, but there are also paid hourly rest rooms at larger stations.
