Pets can be off-leash on nearly all BLM land along US-6, but watch for cactus, rattlesnakes (spring and summer), and porcupines. The only off-leash dog park is in Ely: White River Campground pet area. Most motels in Bishop and Ely are pet-friendly for a $15-30 fee, but Tonopah’s motels are more lenient – the Tonopah Historic Mining Park allows leashed dogs. Carry extra water and a bowl for the high desert; the humidity in the summer is near zero, and paws can crack. The lonely highway means few water stops between Currant and Ely – plan for 6+ hours without pet supplies.

Fatigue Management and Rest Zones

The monotony of the straight highway east of Tonopah is notorious for causing microsleeps. Stops are mandatory every 90 minutes. The best rest areas are: 1) Benton Hot Springs rest area (US-6, mile 7 east of Bishop) – has picnic tables and a warm spring you can soak your feet in. 2) The roadside pullout at the Lunar Crater turnoff (US-6, mile 56 east of Tonopah) – no facilities but incredible silence. 3) The Hickison Petroglyph picnic area (US-50, mile 28 east of Austin) has a short trail and bathrooms. Ely’s visitor center (on US-50 at 1401) has a tire inflation station and free coffee for truckers.

Natural Landscapes and Attractions

Leaving Fresno, you drive through the agricultural San Joaquin Valley – almond orchards and dairy farms. At Madera, take CA-41 north to the Sierra foothills. The first major natural stop is the Fossil Falls volcanic area near Olancha, a 20-minute detour off US-395. The basalt lava is polished by glacial meltwater into smooth, sculpted forms. • Lunar Crater (29 miles west of Currant on US-6): a 400-foot-deep maar crater formed by volcanic steam explosion. Short walk to the rim; no guardrails.

The ghost town of Bodie, CA (north of Mono Lake) is a 50-mile detour off US-395 but worth it for the best-preserved gold-rush town in the USA. Closer to the route, the completely abandoned railroad stop of Candelaria, NV sits off a gravel road 20 miles east of the California line on US-6. Only foundations and a cemetery remain. For a surreal detour, drive the 4WD road to the Sand Mountain recreation area east of Fallon – a 600-foot-high singing sand dune that booms in the wind.

Local Commerce and Culture

Bishop, CA (160 miles from Fresno) is the last substantial town before the desert. The historic Bishop Basque restaurant scene – try the lamb stew at the Pinon Café. Tonopah preserves a wild-west saloon, the Belvada Hotel, and the Central Nevada Museum with mining artifacts. Ely’s main street has a 1950s neon timeline: the Hotel Nevada’s digital sign dates to 1958, and the Northern Nevada Railroad Museum offers steam train rides. For authentic Paiute beadwork, stop at the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge visitor center (40 miles north of Fallon) – not directly on route but a 30-mile northern jog.

Fuel and Route Economics

Gas stations are sparse east of Bishop. The next reliable fuel is in Tonopah (160 miles), then only at Ely (140 miles). In between, the only option is the one-pump store at the ghost town of Currant, but it often runs dry. Fill up in Bishop (several stations on US-395) and top off again in Tonopah.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable travel, with wildflowers in May (especially along US-395 north of Independence) and golden aspen in October.

This route passes near two UNESCO sites. The first is Yosemite National Park (75 miles north of Fresno on CA-41), but that’s a major detour. The second is the newly inscribed Great Basin National Park (2024 tentative) – actually not UNESCO yet, but the ancient bristlecone pine groves and Lehman Caves are a candidate. The park is 60 miles east of Ely on US-50. The Wheeler Peak bristlecones are over 4,000 years old.
