Fenghuang to Guangyuan Drive: Best Stops & Scenic Route

The drive from Fenghuang to Guangyuan is roughly 1,100 kilometers along the G56 and G5 expressways, crossing four provinces: Hunan, Guizhou, Chongqing, and Sichuan. The route takes you through the Wuling Mountains, the Sichuan Basin, and along the upper reaches of the Jialing River, offering dramatic shifts in elevation and vegetation.

Both G56 and G5 are well-maintained, but the mountainous sections have sharp curves and frequent speed limits (80–100 km/h). In winter, ice can form on bridges in Guizhou and northern Sichuan; check forecasts before setting out.

For families, service areas often have playgrounds and clean restrooms. The Chongqing area has several family-friendly pit stops, such as the Jinyun Mountain scenic area, just off the G5. For pets, most service areas allow leash-walking, but not all have dedicated pet relief areas; carry water and waste bags.

After leaving Fenghuang, the landscape quickly becomes mountainous, with tunnels and bridges dominating the first 300 km. Near Zunyi, you'll cross the scenic Maotai River area, home to famous liquor distilleries. As you enter Sichuan, hills give way to flat agricultural plains, with orange groves and rice paddies.

Local commerce along the route is concentrated at service areas, where you can buy regional specialties like fermented tofu from Hunan, Maotai-flavor baijiu, or Sichuan peppercorns. Off-highway, villages offer fresh produce and simple eateries, but be cautious of detours that may add significant time.

The G56 (Hangrui Expressway) connects Fenghuang to Chongqing, while the G5 (Beijing–Kunming Expressway) continues to Guangyuan. Both are toll roads; expect to pay around ¥0.5 per kilometer, totaling about ¥550. The journey is best done in two days with a night near Chongqing, or a single long day if you're used to 10+ hours at the wheel.

• Fuel stations: Plentiful every 50 km on major expressways; service areas include CNPC and Sinopec.
• Diesel and petrol: Standard grades (92, 95, 0) available; check your vehicle's requirements.
• Road tolls: G56 and G5 have separate toll gates; use ETC or cash (cards accepted at main booths).
• Rest areas: About 30 along the route, most with toilets, convenience stores, and fast food.
