Enshi to Xiangyang Road Trip: Caves, Gorges & Hubei Highlands

Leaving Enshi’s Tujia mountain city, the G50 Yaogan Expressway plunges into a maze of limestone peaks and fog-filled valleys before leveling out near the Han River. The full route runs 320 kilometers via the G50 and G70, taking about 4.5 hours without breaks—but the hidden gorges and cliff temples along the way invite longer.

This drive crosses the transition from karst plateau to the Jianghan Plain, where the climate shifts from humid highland mist to drier river valley air. It’s worth the trip for the contrast, especially in late spring when the rapeseed fields bloom yellow along the highway.

Enshi Grand Canyon, a UNESCO Global Geopark, sits just 60 km east of the city center and features towering pillar karsts and the 108-meter-high Yunlong Dizuo Bridge. A short detour south leads to the unmatched Qingjiang River Gallery, where cruise boats pass beneath stunning limestone arches.

Further along the route, the Xuanen Qizi Gorge offers rappelling and hiking among mossy cliffs, while the less-known Longlin Gorge near Jianshi hides emerald pools and ancient plank roads. Local farmers sell dried mushrooms, tea, and pickled Tujia vegetables at roadside stands near the Wufeng exit.

Traditional Tujia villages appear off exits 5 and 8, where you can watch hand-woven brocade (xilankapu) being made and taste sour-tangy rape-sprout dishes. Unlike typical highway stretches, this corridor is dotted with small farms and family-run tea houses.

Fuel along the G50 is plentiful, with service areas every 40–50 km near towns like Jiannan and Xingfu. Diesel and petrol prices align with provincial averages (around ¥7.5/L as of 2024); a full tank easily covers the route, but fill up before leaving Enshi to avoid higher prices at smaller stations.

Tolls for the entire journey cost about ¥140 for a standard car, payable via ETC or cash. Restrooms and convenience stores at the large Xinhua and Badong West service areas are well-maintained, and both have basic fast-food options.

For families, the Jianshi service area (km 108) features an indoor playground and clean baby-care rooms. The Gaoping service area (km 180) has a small pet exercise area with waste bags, making it a key stop for dog owners.

For fatigue breaks, plan to stop every 2 hours; the best stretches are at the Longtan and Huangniya service areas, which have shaded picnic tables and short walking trails. If you seek hidden gems beyond the highway, consider the Tangya River wetland, a quiet bird-watching spot 10 km south of the G70 near Gaolan—look for the unmarked gravel turnoff.
