Dujiangyan to Mianyang Drive: Scenic Route & Hidden Gems

The Dujiangyan–Mianyang route mirrors the ancient Shu Road, historically linking Chengdu Plain to northern Sichuan. The modern drive follows the S1 Chengdu–Mianyang–Leshan Expressway, a toll road built on the northern edge of the Longmen Shan fault zone.

Important: Use the table below for quick reference on distance and time. The direct drive is about 130 kilometers, while the scenic route via Dezhou and Anzhou adds 30 kilometers and 20 minutes.

Road safety is generally high, but watch for fog from November to February, especially between Shifang and Mianyang. The expressway has no toll booths beyond Anzhou, so plan rest stops at the Dezhou Service Area (kilometer 57) or the Zhongxing Service Area (kilometer 89). These offer clean restrooms, covered parking, and convenience stores with local snacks.

For families, the Mianyang Sci-Tech City Museum is a must-stop if you have kids—it features interactive exhibits on Sichuan's aerospace achievements. Alternatively, the Fule Mountain Park in Mianyang has a cable car and a giant panda statue, a favorite photo spot.

Pets are welcome at many roadside restaurants, but not inside the expressway service areas. If you're traveling with a dog, plan to stop at the Bajiao Pet-Friendly Diner (off exit 12), which offers a fenced yard.

To manage fatigue, take a 15-minute break every 2 hours. The Qingshan Rest Area (kilometer 73) has a meditation garden and shaded benches. Note: Trucks use the right lane exclusively; keep left if you're maintaining higher speeds.

The S1 expressway runs parallel to the Chengdu–Mianyang Railway, both cutting through the hilly western rim of the Sichuan Basin. Fuel stations cluster at expressway service areas and on the G108 national road, with the last petrol stop before Mianyang at the Anzhou service area (49 km marker).

• Toll charges for a standard car: approximately ¥60 on the S1, payable by ETC or cash (¥5 less during off-peak hours).
• Road quality is consistently good: four-lane asphalt with guardrails on most segments, but the section between Dujiangyan and Shifang (approximately 20 km) has a 100 km/h limit due to geological settlement.
• For real-time traffic updates, use the Sichuan Transportation app; radio frequencies 95.5 FM (Sichuan Traffic) and 101.7 FM (Mianyang Traffic) broadcast accident alerts.

Departing Dujiangyan, the road hugs the Min River until the dual-purpose Yingxiu–Wolong Highway branches north. The initial 25 km pass through lush bamboo groves and terraced tea plantations, with the Longxi–Hongkou National Nature Reserve visible to the west.

As you leave the mountains, the terrain flattens into rice paddies and vegetable fields, but the highlight is the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (UNESCO World Heritage Site) at the start. This ancient engineering marvel, dating to 256 BCE, still irrigates the Chengdu Plain.

In Dezhou, stop at the local wheat market for fresh noodles—the region's staple. Just east, Anzhou town offers a small but active night market with handmade tofu and Mianyang-style spicy rabbit.

For hidden gems, look for the Shu Road Tea House in the village of Bajiao (off exit 12, 3 km west). This local institution serves traditional 'gaiwan' tea and provides a panoramic view of the Min River terraces.

Note: The UNESCO site at Dujiangyan is best visited early to avoid crowds, but the irrigation channels are visible from the road without entering the park.
