Dubois to Athol: Wyoming’s Winds to Idaho’s Lakes

Begin in Dubois, Wyoming, a town of 1,000 at 6,935 feet, where the Wind River meets the Absaroka Range. The drive to Athol, Idaho covers 540 miles and typically takes 9 hours of pure wheel time, but plan for 11 with stops. This route crosses the Continental Divide twice and dips into three national parks.

This route offers a geologist’s dream: volcanic basalt flows at Craters of the Moon National Monument and ancient sand dunes at Bruneau Dunes. The Grand Teton Range looms for 60 miles to the north, while the Snake River Plain stretches south, carved by the Yellowstone hotspot.

Local commerce along US-20 and I-15 includes farm stands selling huckleberry products and Idaho potatoes. In Arco, visit the “Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 1” museum.

UNESCO lists none of the parks directly, but Yellowstone and Grand Teton are in the region and are Biosphere Reserves. Just the same, these parks sit within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a UNESCO-recognized global heritage.

For hidden gems, detour to the south entrance of Yellowstone via US-89, which adds 2 hours but rewards with geothermal features. Or explore the ghost town of Gilmore, Idaho near Leadore, a gold-mining relic with abandoned cabins.

Interesting known fact: US-20 crosses the Continental Divide at Monida Pass (6,870 ft), where the original stagecoach route once ran.

Watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk: deer, elk, and moose frequent road edges. Roads are mostly two-lane with shoulder rumble strips; some mountain passes have steep grades and hairpin turns. Keep a winter emergency kit.

Plan rest stops every 2-3 hours. Top options: Teton Science School near Jackson (education break), Idaho Falls’ Greenbelt (family walk), and the East Idaho Museum in Dubois. For families, the Sand Dunes at St. Anthony offer dune sledding rentals, while kids love the lava tubes at Craters of the Moon.

Pets are welcome at most outdoor stops, but not inside visitor centers (check at each). Water bowls are often available at rest areas. For fatigue, use highway rest areas near Irwin and Spencer, which have picnic tables and shade.

US-26 from Dubois climbs over Togwotee Pass (9,659 ft) then descends into Jackson Hole. From Jackson, US-191 runs south to Hoback Junction, then US-89 east to Alpine, where US-26 cuts west into Idaho. Continue on I-15 north from Idaho Falls, then US-90 west to Athol.

Fuel is sparse: fill up in Dubois, Jackson, Idaho Falls, and Missoula (the last major city before Athol, 40 miles east). Gas prices rise about 10% in mountain towns. Pack water and snacks; services are 50+ miles apart in some stretches.
