Drive Meishan to Luzhou: Routes, Stops, and Hidden Gems

Meishan, the birthplace of the Song dynasty poet Su Shi, sits in the southern Chengdu Plain. Luzhou, where the Tuo River joins the Yangtze, is famous for its strong liquor. The direct route between them is the G4215 Rongzun Expressway, a 190-kilometer asphalt ribbon that cuts across the southern Sichuan hills. Though the drive is straightforward, the region rewards those who slow down.

The expressway was completed in 2012, and it typically takes about 2.5 hours by car with normal traffic. However, the more scenic national roads—like G321—take longer but offer a closer look at the countryside's bamboo groves and rice paddies.

Just off the G4215 at the Jiang'an exit, you can visit the Bamboo Sea in southern Sichuan, a 120-square-kilometer park with over 400 bamboo species. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries—although wild pandas are rare here, the bamboo groves provide a habitat for other wildlife.

Along the G321, you'll find local markets in towns like Weiyuan, where farmers sell fresh citrus and pickled vegetables. The region is known for its lushy rice terraces and traditional farmhouses with tiled roofs.

In terms of culinary infrastructure, both expressway service areas and roadside restaurants offer local specialties. Look for 'Changshou tofu' (longevity tofu) in the town of Changshou, and 'Luzhou lajiao' (spicy chicken) near Luzhou, both are regional favorites.

The expressway has good lighting and emergency phones every 2 kilometers. However, fog is common in the winter months, especially in the early morning, so it's wise to check the weather forecast before departing. The route is generally safe, but beware of trucks on the slow lanes.

For families, the Bamboo Sea is a great stop to stretch legs: kids can walk the bamboo paths and see a small panda museum. There are also several rest areas with playgrounds near the Jiang'an exit.

Traveling with pets is allowed on the expressway if they're properly secured in a carrier. Rest areas have designated pet relief areas with waste bags.

To manage fatigue, plan to stop every 2 hours or 150 kilometers. The service area at 'Shunan' (south Sichuan) has a coffee shop and a small hotel if you need a longer break. Hidden off-route spots include the Meishan Black Dragon Pool, a quiet lake near Renshou county that offers boating and tranquil walks.
