Coronado to Murphys: Coastal to Gold Country Drive

Drive north from Coronado across the San Diego–Coronado Bridge, built in 1969 with a 90-foot clearance for naval ships. This 7,464-foot arc connects the island to I-5, the first artery of a 480-mile journey to Murphys. The route passes through Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base established in 1942, and climbs the Grapevine (I-5) over Tejon Pass at 4,144 feet. Expect 8 to 9 hours of driving without stops.
