Chongzuo to Bijie Road Trip: Scenic Route and Practical Guide

Chongzuo, near the Vietnam border, sits at the edge of Guangxi's karst country, where limestone peaks rise abruptly from the flat valley floors. Bijie, in Guizhou, is known for its highland plateaus and dramatic canyons. The drive between them is a journey from tropical southern China to cooler, hillier terrain, crossing part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.

The total distance is about 860 kilometers, typically taking 10-11 hours on the G75 and G60 expressways, depending on traffic and stops. This route offers a mix of dramatic landscapes, historical sites, and cultural encounters.

The landscapes shift from Chongzuo's vertical karst formations, reminiscent of Guilin but less crowded, to the terraced hills and heavy forests of northern Guangxi. As you climb into Guizhou, the terrain becomes more rugged, with wide valleys and deep canyons near Bijie.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites near the route include the Ming Dynasty tombs and ancient rock paintings at Zuojiang, just outside Chongzuo. Further north, in Guiyang, the Jiaxiu Tower offers a cultural pause, though it's not a UNESCO site.

Local commerce along the way is dominated by farmers' markets selling fresh produce, such as sugar cane, bananas, and pomelos in Guangxi, while Guizhou offers chestnuts and mushrooms. These markets are excellent for tasting regional specialties like Guilin rice noodles (in the east) and sour soup fish (in Guizhou).

Road safety is generally high, but mountain passes can have steep gradients and sudden weather. Always check weather forecasts, especially in the rainy season (May-September) when fog and slippery roads are common. Use engine braking on long descents.

For families, rest stops like the ones near Hechi have playgrounds and clean restrooms. The Longtan National Forest Park (near Hechi) offers short nature walks suitable for children. Pets are allowed on most expressways, but must be secured in a crate or harness; many rest stops have designated pet relief areas, and some hotels along the route are pet-friendly—call ahead to confirm.

To manage fatigue, plan to stop every 2-3 hours. Consider staying overnight at the Nanning or Guiyang services, which have comfortable sleep cabins and good food. Hidden gems off the route include the detour to the Chengjiang Fossil Site (a World Heritage Site) near Guiyang, or the lesser-known Malinghe Canyon near Xingyi.

The journey is primarily on the G75 (Lanhai Expressway) from Chongzuo to Nanning, then onto the G60 (Shanghai-Kunming Expressway) through Hechi to Guiyang, and finally the S82/326 Provincial Road to Bijie. Road conditions are generally good, with well-maintained asphalt and clear signage.

Fuel stations are abundant along the expressways, roughly every 30-50 kilometers. Expect fuel costs around 0.8-0.9 RMB per kilometer, totaling approximately 690-780 RMB for the whole trip.
