Chenzhou to Anshun Drive: G76 Route Guide & Stops

The G76 Xiamen–Chengdu Expressway forms the backbone of the 780-kilometer drive from Chenzhou (Hunan) to Anshun (Guizhou). This corridor cuts through the Nanling Mountains and the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, where the terrain shifts from Hunan's rice paddies to Guizhou's karst towers.

Leaving Chenzhou, you'll pass Chenzhou's Suxian Ridge, a forested peak visible from the highway. After Zhuzhou's Yanling County, continue southwest into Guizhou where the real drama begins near Liping County: the Liping Dong Village, a UNESCO World Heritage candidate. As you approach Anshun, the Huangguoshu Waterfall area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (part of South China Karst), is a must-see. The waterfall is 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide.

Local commerce along the route: At the Zhijin service area (near Bijie), you can buy local silk and lacquerware. In Fuquan, look for dried chili vendors. Near Huangguoshu, buy fresh pineapple from nearby farms (seasonal). Small roadside stalls sell batik textiles as you near Anshun.

The G76 is a modern divided highway with two to three lanes in each direction, but be prepared for tunnels and long grades. On a typical trip, you'll encounter dozens of tunnels, especially near the Hunan–Guizhou border.

• Toll costs: Expect around ¥0.5 per kilometer, totaling ¥400-500 for the whole journey.
• Fuel stations: Dense clusters every 50-80 km on the G76, including all major brands (Sinopec, PetroChina).
• Rest areas: There are 15+ well-maintained service areas with toilets, snacks, and sometimes hot meals.

If you're driving a fuel-efficient car, plan one refueling stop about halfway, near Kaili. Diesel and petrol prices in Guizhou are typically ¥0.2-0.3 cheaper per liter than in Hunan.

During winter, the section from Tongren to Kaili can see ice on the road; carry chains if traveling December–February. Summer is rainy with frequent fog, reducing visibility. The road quality is generally good, but watch for potholes near construction zones.

For families, the Kaili service area has clean restrooms and a children's play area. The Huangguoshu area offers a scenic elevator and paved paths suitable for strollers. Many hotels in these areas offer family rooms.

For pets, most service areas allow leashed pets on the grass, but check with hotels in advance. There are several pet-friendly hotels in Anshun, such as those in the Old Town district.

To manage fatigue, plan to stop every two hours. The Jianhe service area (near Kaili) is a good place to stretch legs with a walking path.
