The 105-mile coastal corridor from Charleston to Tybee Island is nearly dead flat, with the highest point along US-17 barely 30 feet above sea level. This is a landscape shaped by tides, where bridges over salt marshes create the illusion of driving on water. The route length is exactly 105 miles via US-17 and GA-170, a two-and-a-half-hour drive without traffic, but the real journey is measured in oyster shells and driftwood.

One geographic quirk: Tybee Island sits on one of the last barrier islands before the Georgia-Florida line, and the entire route runs parallel to the Intracoastal Waterway. You are never more than a few miles from tidal creeks, shrimp boats, and pluff mud. This is a road that demands slow driving and frequent stops.

The defining natural feature is the ACE Basin, a 350,000-acre estuarine preserve where the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers meet.
