The drive from Cao Lanh in Vietnam's Dong Thap province to Pursat in Cambodia covers approximately 240 kilometers, crossing the border at the Song Tien (Vinh Xuong) checkpoint before rejoining the Asian Highway A1 (National Route 1) in Cambodia. Expect a driving time of 5 to 6 hours, depending on border formalities and the state of Cambodian roads.

This route cuts through the southern tip of the Mekong Delta's floodplains, then rises onto the flat grasslands of Cambodia's western provinces, offering a genuine cross-border journey.

Rice paddies dominate both sides of the border, with the Mekong's tributaries visible near Cao Lanh. entering Cambodia, vast Kampuchea rice fields stretch to the horizon, dotted with sugar palm trees – a symbol of the country.

Local markets thrive at the border and in provincial towns like Krong Koh Kong if you detour. Try fruit stalls selling rambutan and dragon fruit, and sample Cambodian noodles at roadside eateries.

The first leg from Cao Lanh follows Provincial Road 848 to the Vinh Xuong border crossing. After exiting, join Cambodian National Route 1 toward Phnom Penh, then turn north onto National Route 5 at Neak Loeung (if using the ferry) or continue on NR1 to Phnom Penh's ring road to access NR5. Alternatively, a newer route via Kep and Kampot avoids Phnom Penh but adds 200 km.
