Cao Bang to Yuxi: A Road Trip Guide

The drive from Cao Bang in northeastern Vietnam to Yuxi in Yunnan, China, is a 1,250-kilometer journey that crosses the Sino-Vietnamese border at Hé Kǒu (Lào Cai) and climbs from karst mountains to the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. One of the region's geological quirks: the route passes through the Red River Fault zone, which has shaped the dramatic gorges you'll see along the way.

For families, the drive is long but doable with planning. Pack snacks and water, as restaurant stops are limited on the Vietnamese side. In Hekou, the Vietnamese and Chinese border towns have basic hotels and eateries, but accommodations improve after Mengzi in China.

Fatigue is the biggest risk; plan to stop every 2–3 hours. Vietnam has rest stops with cafes and bathrooms, but they are less frequent. On the Chinese expressways, service areas every 50 km offer fuel, food, and toilets, with some having playgrounds and family rooms. Pet-friendly policies: Vietnamese roadside stops are generally lenient with pets, but Chinese expressway service areas often restrict pets in indoor dining—bring a carrier and leash.

From Cao Bang, the first stretch snakes through the Pia Oac National Park, where limestone karst pinnacles rise abruptly from rice paddies. Near Lào Cai, the landscapes transition to Tiger’s Jaw Pass, a scenic mountain pass with switchbacks that offer panorama viewpoints. In China, the G80 cuts through the Ailao Mountains, known for their terraced slopes and the Bi Jie (Biyue) Gorge, visible from the road.

This is also the gateway to the unique red-earth terrain of Yunnan, which becomes more pronounced as you approach Yuxi.

Along the way, local markets in Sapa (detour) and Hekou offer ethnic minority textiles, including Hmong embroidery and Dai brocades. In Yuxi, the Eshan tin mines are a historical trade item, and local commerce revolves around tobacco, tea, and the famous Yuxi cigarettes.

The route uses Vietnam's National Road QL.4E from Cao Bang to Lào Cai, then crosses the Red River via the Hồng Hà bridge at the Hà Khẩu border gate. On the Chinese side, you'll continue on the G80 Expressway (Kaiyuan–Mengzi) and then the Kunhe Expressway to Yuxi, a city in Yunnan's tobacco heartland.

Driving time is roughly 16–18 hours without overnight stops, but most travelers split it into two days. The border crossing at Lào Cai is open daily from 07:00 to 22:00; expect 1–2 hours for procedures, including vehicle permits.

Fuel stops are plentiful in Vietnam (every 20–30 km) but sparser on the Chinese expressways until you reach Mengzi. Prices are slightly lower in Vietnam (approx. 24,000 VND/liter) than China (approx. 8.5 CNY/liter, as of 2025), so fill up before crossing.
