Driving from Bhaktapur, a UNESCO-listed medieval city in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, to Shannan, a prefecture-level city in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is a 1,200-kilometer journey that crosses the Himalayas via the Arniko Highway (China National Highway 318). This route, part of the ancient Salt Road, takes you through dramatic geological transitions: from the subtropical valley at 1,400 meters elevation to the Tibetan Plateau averaging 3,600 meters.
