Baoshan to Deqin: Driving the Yunnan Highlands

The drive from Baoshan to Deqin crosses the Gaoligongshan mountain range, a 600-kilometer corridor where the Irrawaddy and Mekong river systems carve parallel gorges. You'll traverse the famous G56 Hangrui Expressway for the first 200 kilometers, then switch to the G214 National Highway as you approach the Tibetan Plateau.

For families, the journey offers kid-friendly stops like the Dali Ancient Town with its cobblestone streets and the Lijiang Old Town, a UNESCO site where children can watch traditional music performances. Rest areas are plentiful but often basic—carry a picnic blanket and snacks.
