Augsburg to Bellinzona Road Trip Guide: Alps & Lakes

The drive from Augsburg to Bellinzona spans 420 kilometers, crossing three countries and two major alpine passes. Historically, this route follows a portion of the Roman road from Augusta Vindelicorum to the Alpine passes.

• Austria: A1 to Feldkirch, then A14/E60 to Liechtenstein border.
• Switzerland: A2/E35 to Chur, then A13/E43 to Bellinzona.

Road quality is excellent throughout. Speed limits: Germany 130 km/h (unrestricted on some sections), Austria 130 km/h, Switzerland 120 km/h.

Night illumination is good on highways but limited on mountain roads. The San Bernardino tunnel is well-lit and safe.

For families: Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne (1h detour), and the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (1.5h detour). In Bellinzona, three UNESCO-listed castles.

Pet-friendly: Most rest stops along the A1 and A13 have designated dog areas. The Pfänder cable car allows leashed dogs.

Fatigue management: Stop at Raststätte Allgäu (km 120) or Rastplatz Heerbrugg (km 200). For naps, use designated parking areas or service plazas.

Hidden off-route spot: Visit the abandoned castle ruins of Alt-Sax, 5 minutes from the A13 near Sennwald.

Geographical shifts from the Bavarian plains to the Alpine valleys are dramatic. The route passes Lake Constance, the Rhine Valley, and the Alps.

Near Bregenz, the Pfänder mountain offers a panoramic view of the lake. The Rhine Valley is lush, with vineyards in the Liechtenstein area.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites near the route include the Old Town of Bern (detour 1h) and the Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona (near Chur). The Abbey of St. Gallen is a short detour east of Bregenz.

Local commerce: In Lindau, sample Bodensee fish. In the Liechtenstein area, try Käsknöpfle. Along the A13, roadside stalls sell local cheeses and dried meats.
