The drive takes 4.5-5.5 hours non-stop, but how to find the best stops and hidden gems between cities transforms it into a multi-day adventure. Afternoon traffic around Thiva (Thebes) often snarls, so plan departures early.

Safety: A1 has modern barriers and lighting; but some sections (Thiva-Lamia) lack median dividers – stay alert. Speed cameras are common near Larissa and Katerini; limit 130 km/h, often drops to 110 km/h in construction zones. Police patrols use unmarked cars.
