This route demands planning because of long stretches with minimal services. The first major city after Ashland is Klamath Falls, OR (approximately 1 hour). From there, Lakeview, OR is another 1.5 hours, and then Winnemucca, NV is about 3 hours beyond that.

• Fuel density: The longest gap without gas is between Lakeview, OR and Winnemucca, NV (about 150 miles). Fill up in Lakeview.
• Road conditions: US-395 is well-paved but two-lane in many sections. Watch for deer at dawn/dusk near shrublands.
• Altitude gains: The route peaks at 4,200 feet near the Oregon/Nevada border, with Tonopah at 6,000 feet. Vehicles may feel less powerful.
