Anyang to Yichang Drive: Best Stops & Route Guide

Begin in Anyang, one of China's ancient capitals and home to the Yin Xu archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Drive south through Henan and Hubei provinces to reach Yichang, the gateway to the Three Gorges Dam. The route follows the G4 Expressway for most of the way, passing through Zhengzhou, Xuchang, and Xiangyang before descending into the Yangtze River valley.

Total distance is about 700 kilometers, typically 7-8 hours driving time without breaks. The road is well-maintained and mostly flat or gently rolling, with a few mountain sections near the end.

The route is safe, with well-marked lanes and streetlights at most interchanges. However, watch for trucks on the G4, especially at night. Keep a safe distance and use rest areas every 2-3 hours to combat fatigue.

The final approach to Yichang offers a dramatic view of the Yangtze River as it cuts through the Three Gorges region.

For UNESCO World Heritage, the highlights are Yin Xu in Anyang and, slightly off the direct path, the ancient building complex in Wudangshan (adding about 2 hours detour). Both are accessible with a day trip.
