Anyang to Shangqiu Road Trip: Best Stops & Drive Guide

Leaving Anyang, home of the Yin Xu ruins—the first verified capital of ancient China—the route to Shangqiu traces the Yellow River's dusty plain. The distance is a manageable 250 kilometers, so the drive is an easy half-day affair for most.

This corridor isn't about dramatic mountains; it's a flat, agricultural canvas punctuated by small towns and historic sites. The climate is temperate and monsoonal, with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters—best experienced in spring or autumn.

The expressway G4 runs four lanes each way for most of the route, with good signage in both Chinese and English. Fuel economy on these flat roads is excellent; expect around 6 liters per 100 km. Toll charges are about ¥150, and rest stops occur every 50 km.

The scenery is classic North China Plain: endless wheat, corn, and cotton fields. Near Hebi, the Qi River cuts through the landscape, offering rare riverbanks and a patchwork of green.

Local commerce thrives in roadside markets, especially around Kaifeng. Here, you'll find traditional snacks like soup dumplings, and silk embroidery stalls.

Kaifeng itself is a historic gem with a rebuilt Qingming Riverside Landscape Park and the Iron Pagoda—the best detour if you have time. The city's flavor is authentic but not overwhelming.
