Anshun to Neijiang: Scenic Drive Guide & Hidden Gems

Before the expressway era, the journey from Anshun to Neijiang snaked through the Wumeng Mountains, a route that once took two days by bus. Today, the G76厦蓉高速 (Xiamen-Chengdu Expressway) slices the travel time to roughly 4.5 hours over 380 kilometers, but the old road still offers a glimpse into a slower, more rugged past.

The G76 expressway is well-maintained, with two lanes per direction and a speed limit of 100-120 km/h. It is the only major highway directly connecting Anshun and Neijiang, but you can also opt for National Highway G321 for a slower, more scenic route.

Fuel and Rest Stops: There are at least six service areas along the G76, each with fuel stations, restrooms, and basic eateries. The most notable are the Dafang Service Area (大方服务区) and the Qixingguan Service Area (七星关服务区), both about 100 km from Anshun and Neijiang respectively.

The G76 is generally safe with proper signage and guardrails. However, fog is common in the mountain sections, especially at dawn and dusk, reducing visibility to below 50 meters. In such conditions, reduce speed to 60 km/h and use fog lights. Also, beware of frequent trucks ascending the steeper grades; maintain a safe following distance.

For families, the route is child-friendly. Rest stops at Dafang and Qixingguan have playgrounds and clean restrooms with baby-changing facilities. For a longer break, the Zhijin Cave visit is educational and fun, but note that the cave's walkways are not stroller-friendly, so a carrier is recommended. For pets, the expressway service areas generally allow leashed pets in outdoor areas, but only some (like Dafang) have designated pet relief zones. Always keep your pet on a leash and never leave it alone in the car.

Fatigue management is crucial. Plan to stop every 2 hours; the service areas are the best spots to rest. If you feel drowsy, pull over at the nearest service area and take a 15-20 minute nap. A less-known rest area is the Bijie (毕节) Service Area, just 30 minutes from the Guizhou-Sichuan border, which has a quiet rest lounge with reclining chairs. Also, note that the old National Highway G321 passes through several small towns where you can experience local tea houses and noodle shops, but driving it will add at least 2 hours to your journey.

The route traverses the karst landscape of Guizhou, with limestone peaks and deep gorges. Just before the Sichuan border, the Wumeng Mountains rise to 2,000 meters, offering panoramic views from the Qixingguan Bridge, one of the highest in the region.

For a detour, take the exit at Nayong (纳雍) and drive 20 km to the Zhijin Cave (织金洞), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This limestone cave system features 200,000 square meters of chambers, with the 'King's Palace' hall measuring 17,000 square meters. In contrast, the nearby Jiuyan Zhuang (九眼灶) is an off-the-beaten-path village where locals still brew maize wine using ancient methods.

Route economics lean in favor of driving. A one-way trip costs roughly ¥500 including tolls and fuel, while a high-speed rail ticket (Anshun to Neijiang) costs around ¥200 per person, making driving pricier for solo travelers but cheaper for families of three or more. The local commerce along the way is focused on agriculture; you'll see cornfields and bamboo groves, and roadside stalls selling fresh plums and walnuts during the harvest season (July-September).
