Before you head east out of Alliance, Nebraska, note that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad's coal trains still rumble through the town's historic depot district, a nod to the region's rail heritage. The drive to Keystone, South Dakota covers roughly 300 miles via US-385 and US-16, typically taking 5 to 6 hours. This route traverses the Nebraska Sandhills, the Black Hills, and the southern edge of Badlands National Park, offering a mix of prairie and pine-clad mountains.

Along the way, you'll encounter the iconic Carhenge in Alliance, the wildlife-rich Wind Cave National Park, and the sculpted faces of Mount Rushmore, just a short detour from Keystone. The route offers a snapshot of the Great Plains' transition to the Rocky Mountains, with fossils, canyons, and historic gold-mining towns dotting the landscape.

Road quality is good, but watch for wildlife, especially deer and bison, particularly around Wind Cave and Custer State Park. Use extra caution at dawn and dusk.
